Still Better Than Zoom? Why Local Events Are Making a Comeback

Jun 23, 2025

From handshake deals to booth buzz, in-person events are proving they’ve still got it.

There’s a lot to love about virtual meetings-sweatpants, coffee refills, no commute. I get it. I’ve pitched deals in fuzzy socks more times than I can count. But after spending the better part of three years bouncing between virtual meetings like Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams, I’ve come to a realization: local events still hit differently. And in the best way.

Let me backtrack. Last year, I signed up for a small local business fair. Nothing fancy, just a few dozen small businesses, some pop-up booths, and a rented rec center. I almost skipped it because, honestly, I thought I could network faster on LinkedIn. But showing up changed everything. Not only did I meet two new collaborators (hi, Jessie and Luca!), but I landed a new client that same week who remembered me because I laughed at her dog’s sweater. True story.

Here’s the thing-there’s something powerful about being there. You smile at someone, you share a coffee, you notice how they listen. It’s the kind of stuff that doesn’t come through a screen. In-person events create a rhythm and vibe that virtual just can’t replicate.

Let’s Talk Real Takeaways:

1. **Trust builds faster face-to-face.** Whether you’re selling branding services, handmade candles, or consulting hours, people remember the person behind the pitch. And trust grows when they can shake your hand (or elbow bump) and look you in the eye.

2. **You hear what’s *really* happening.** At one local entrepreneur roundtable I attended, the best insight wasn’t from the keynote-it was from the guy next to me whispering how he pivoted after his ad budget flopped. These real-world moments are gold.

3. **It’s easier to stand out.** Online, you’re one of hundreds in a chat box. Offline, you’re a person with a story, an energy, a handshake, and maybe even a cool-looking notebook. That sticks.

I’m not saying ditch virtual meetings entirely. It’s efficient and has its place. But I am saying don’t underestimate the power of being in the room. Or the coffee shop. Or the community center. You don’t need to attend massive conferences to make it count. Look for local mixers, coworking space events, pop-up panels, or even volunteer gigs. Show up as a human. You’ll be surprised what comes your way.

And if you’re nervous? Bring a friend. Or go in with a question you’d love to ask someone in your industry. People are usually more open than we expect-especially when there’s free food involved.

So yeah, video calls and remote meetups are here to stay. But don’t let it replace the real moments. The awkward small talk that turns into a new client. The side chat that sparks your next big idea. Local events bring that magic back. And in this noisy digital world, that’s a big win.
