Job Boards are Fine-but Here’s How People are Actually Getting Hired in 2025

You’ll want to update your hiring playbook after reading this

Okay, so here’s the deal. Back in the day, job boards were the go-to for hiring. Post a job, cross your fingers, and wait for a flood of resumes. Sometimes it worked. But it’s 2025, and hiring has changed. A lot.

Today’s best talent? They’re not endlessly scrolling job boards. They’re building cool side projects, freelancing for brands you follow on Instagram, or leading the charge in some Slack group you’ve never even heard of. They’re not waiting for an application link. They’re already working-just not for you yet.

I’ve worked with clients who hired top marketers from a Twitter thread. Another found her lead developer through a mutual in a niche tech newsletter. No job boards, no recruiters-just connection.

So let me break it down. If you’re only using job boards, here’s what you’re missing:

1. People who already have jobs. The best hires aren’t actively looking. They’re waiting to be found-or better yet, intrigued. That means you’ve got to get in front of them where they are.
2. Cultural alignment. A resume can’t show how someone vibes with your team. But a casual coffee chat? That tells you everything.
3. Speed. Good candidates move fast. If your hiring process takes three weeks and includes seven steps, you’ve already lost them to someone more agile.

Here’s what you should be doing instead:

• Start conversations. DM someone on LinkedIn. Comment on their project. Invite them to a virtual coffee. It doesn’t have to be formal to be real.
• Make noise in the right places. Whether that’s a podcast, a behind-the-scenes TikTok, or a spicy take on Threads, let people know who you are and why you’re building what you’re building.
• Empower your team to share. If your employees love working for you, they’re your best recruiters. Let them spread the word and make it easy with visuals, shoutouts, and real talk about the work culture.
• Shorten the process. Make it easy to express interest. A Google Form with five questions is better than a 40-minute application.

Real story-my buddy runs a boutique agency and found their brand designer from a comment on a tweet. No hiring budget, no recruiter. Just two people connecting over design and memes. That’s how real-world hiring happens now.

So, sure, job boards still have a place. They’re not dead. But they’re like the yellow pages of recruiting-okay for volume, not for quality. If you want your next hire to be someone who brings the heat, brings the energy, and actually wants to be there-get out of the inbox and into the convo.

In 2025, hiring isn’t just a process. It’s a vibe. Show up with intention. Be transparent. Offer value. And don’t forget-you’re not just looking for talent. You’re inviting someone into your story.
